Hey Reader,

When clients come to me feeling scattered and like their brains (and bodies) are going in a million different directions, but they don’t really feel like they’re getting anything that really matters to them accomplished, one of the first things I ask them is what they do to get all the stuff that’s floating around in their heads out.

They usually do one of three things: they tell me “nothing,” or that they make lists, or they look at me and say, “I know, I should be journaling, but I just never know what to write.”

Only one of these responses is actually moving towards helping the problem they are actually talking to me about. The other two are simply creating unnecessary mental stress and guilt, ensuring that they will stay stuck in the motion of spinning their wheels and not actually moving forward.

When you feel this way, you’re likely stuck in Phase 2 of your Energetic Rhythms Cycle–the phase dedicated to planning and preparing to take action. This is an essential phase, and also it can be the place where a lot of people get stuck for one reason or another.

It could be that you’re stuck in motion because of:

👉 Too many non-essential things you’ve committed to

👉 Fear

👉 Indecision

👉 Lack of Clarity

👉 Overwhelm because the next step is too complex

👉 The time it takes to do the thing to get you unstuck or to start taking action

👉 Stage of life that you’re in

Whatever the reason, when you feel like you’re paddling upstream instead of flowing with life, it makes life and work so much harder than it actually needs to be.

So for those clients who come to me feeling like they’re stuck because their brains are being pulled in too many directions, I offer up 1 simple suggestion to get them started moving into the next phase of Taking Action.

And that suggestion is to do a “Brain Dump.” This isn’t a journal entry or just another list of things to do, it’s an intentional way of pulling everything that is calling for your attention out of your brain and putting it on paper so you can actually see what is taking up space, rent-free, in your brain.

Then, once it’s all out, you get to sort and choose what is essential, what needs to be done by you, what can be delegated and what can be eliminated.

It gives you a clear view of seeing what all the little things are that take up your time and keep you from doing the big things that are necessary to you living out the best version of yourself. That version that is in flow with your time, energy and focus even when unexpected things come up.

Because when you are taking action on the big things first (example: doing a morning routine that helps you get grounded, like I talked about last week), the little things seem easier…or even turn into non-issues.

In the book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown, he very much talks about being in this “in-motion” phase where life is happening to you rather than you taking action towards what’s actually essential in life.

And it’s similar to what I share in Episode 50 of the Health Harmony and Happiness with Cathy podcast.
