Hey Reader!
I was talking to a former student one day a while back and asking him his reasons for training for an Ironman 70.3 since it’s so hard on a person’s body (I’ve watched my husband train for numerous triathlons and 1/2 and full marathons, and he himself is now training for this Ironman as well; I’ve also trained for numerous 20K’s and know the toll it takes on the body).
Needless to say, deciding to train for an event like the Ironman is not likely something that most people take lightly, and knowing him, I knew this was quite out of his wheelhouse.
His response just happened to go right along with the content I was putting together for this week’s podcast.
He said “I want to see if I can push myself beyond what is ‘safe’ to me. I’ve never really put myself in a place where failure is a real possibility.”
Let me repeat that so it sinks in…
“…never really put myself in a place where failure is a real possibility.”
Wow, that profound statement hit close to home!
How many of you out there don’t take the risk because it’s comfortable to just keep doing what you’ve been doing? Because it’s “safe” to stay in your comfort zone and not move beyond it?
You stay busy because you think if you slow down or don’t volunteer for whatever it is that’s needed by someone else, that no one will do it.
Or maybe you keep avoiding your yoga mat, meditation or any other general health practice because it’s so much work to roll out your mat and remember what you’re going to do, or to drive to the gym or lace up your shoes and step out your front door. The comfort of your daily habits and home or work is just so much easier and safer to live in.
He went on to share that he’s choosing to do this thing that’s totally bringing him to what I call an “edge” because
- He doesn’t often make himself a priority, and although it has it’s moments of anxiousness, he also
- Wants to “lead {his} children to understand falling down teaches more than most successes, and it strengthens the ability to handle adversity.”
🎤 drop.
What???? I couldn’t have said it better when talking about why someone would want to find their edge.
What about you? Do you take time to make yourself a priority even when it makes you uncomfortable?
Finding your edge in whatever you’re doing is inevitably going to make you step into a higher version of yourself, whether that’s in the outward way you express yourself or the inward way you uncover things about yourself that you didn’t even know you could do.
And that’s what I’m talking about in this week’s podcast episode.

Doing hard things inspires and teaches in ways you may not even know when you set out to do them. Sometimes you get to hear the stories of how you’ve inspired someone else, sometimes you don’t, but one thing is certain…you’ll likely NEVER know if you inspired someone else if you’re always playing it safe.
Cheers,
Cathy
