Hey Reader,

Yesterday I took a group of at-risk elementary students to “Camp Calm.” This filled my heart so much I just had to share about it with you. We used our imaginations and pretended the school wrestling room was the outdoors, complete with a river, mountain, bears and snakes; went on a scavenger hunt for supplies disguised as yoga postures and invited creativity with some painting… all while sitting in our “tents” on “sleeping bags” disguised as yoga mats.

For these kids, going on a real life adventure in nature or taking a yoga and mindfulness class with real life tools they can use when the quiet at home becomes scary because “that means my dad and brother aren’t yelling at each other anymore and something really bad has happened” may or may not happen.

But to have a simple comfort tool they can go to when the noise at home gets so loud and overstimulating that it makes them feel shaky and disoriented pulls my heart in so many directions. Because many of us do have the means to access and learn tools for when we’re in similar situations, but just find it hard to make doing so a priority.

Right now, I’ve heard a lot of people comment that summer (and the year for that matter) is going waaay to fast and we’re just over half way through it. If you’ve got kids at home, the back to school anxiety might be setting in along with all the other things you still have yet to do on your summer list. It can start to feel like the world is spinning just a bit too fast, real quick.

The mindfulness tools I practiced and taught the elementary kids yesterday weren’t big or complex, they were simple things they can remember and do when they feel a bit small or lost in this world.

And if I’m right, I’m guessing you have those same moments in your life, they just might look more like comparison and inadequacy from social media or overwhelm and anxiety with work-life balance.

But nature helps us feel calm, strong and clear, just like yoga and mindfulness, so today’s invitation is just to slow down… to notice one thing in nature around you that is changing.

👉Choose a plant, flower or tree that you see every day, and for the next week, pause and watch this bit of nature as it changes in just the right time.

We often neglect the constant change that’s happening around us on a micro level because life is moving so fast and we get wrapped up in going from one thing to the next, but this simple mindfulness tool is your invitation to pause and reset even amidst the chaos.

Use the power of nature, even if only in your imagination to reconnect.

To feel the sunshine on your face, and the breeze on your skin.

Or to imagine the smell of a campfire or seeing a bear.

Notice what happens inside you when you do think of these things, just as you notice that one bit of nature I invited to you watch above on a micro level, notice also, what happens inside of you when you connect IRL or in your mind with nature.

Until next week…

Cheers,

I can feel calm, strong, and clear even when the world is spinning all around me.
