Reader, it’s a quiet truth that perhaps only women are aware of.
When women have a day off, 90% of the time, if not more, it’s filled already with
✅household chores ✅projects that need to be advanced or completed ✅appointments that need to be scheduled or attended
and much more…
before she even schedules the day off.
When men have a day off, it’s often taken at the last minute, and 99% of the time it’s spent doing what they want to do.
🤎Nothing 🤎fishing 🤎hunting 🤎golfing 🤎biking 🤎relaxing 🤎____________ (fill in the blank with whatever the interest or hobby may be).
I don’t point this out to complain or even to bash men as though they should be pulling more of the weight. If that’s the case, conversations need to be had rather than letting resentment grow.
Instead, I point this out because it’s a mirror for how we, as women, could be remembering to live.
Perhaps it’s that their systems innately know they need a res{e}t, and instead of ignoring that rhythm, they listen. They let their body, mind and spirit fully relax and let go of productive doing.
But what if that res{e}t is actually a phase within the productive doing?
A res{e}t to nurture and care for your body, mind, spirit, and soul.
Yes, checking things off the list that need to be done feels like it provides that nurturing, because it feels good in the moment and probably does settle your nervous system momentarily.
But what trains it to stop hustling all the time for the long haul is actually creating a natural rhythm of resetting that involves true rest or play.
I know I know, sometimes even just the thought of taking a day to play or do nothing actually triggers your nervous system to go into fear mode.
That’s normal when you have been conditioned to go all the time and overlook the rest phase. But it is possible to retrain your nervous system and learn how to be okay with indulging yourself by taking time to remember what you enjoy doing for fun and relaxation.
And then do it without guilt.
So the next time you see your spouse or partner fully embracing his day off to do what he wants to do, pause and reflect for yourself “How can I invite more of that into my life? “
He is a mirror for you. What you see in him that triggers you, is likely linked to something you’re needing to address in your own life.
If that’s your ability to pause and reconnect with yourself, 👋 I’m your gal.
I know this because I lived on the wrong side of that mirror for a long time.
I’ve been doing this work in my own life for over a decade, and although I’m not perfect at it, I have come a long way from being the naturally caffeinated girl working to prove my worth and show up as good enough by just trying harder instead of listening to that inner voice that really just wanted a break and to be able to take a day off.
But avoiding it because I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I did take a day off.
Your body does know when to work and when to rest – it sometimes just forgets, because we train it out of ourselves. Learning to rediscover and hear that rhythm again is what I help you do, even when you feel like that rhythm doesn’t exist within you.
Trust me, it does. The natural world is always mirroring your rhythm back to you.
If this resonated, I’d love to have you join me at the Summer Solstice Rhythms Retreat this June -> a seasonal gathering to reconnect with yourself and your natural rhythm, with space for some deeper self-reflection for those who are ready for it. Investment is $150.
